Banksy – Better Out Than In – Day 13

So there have been mystery artist sales before today – think Royal Academy postcards which are purchased before you know who created them – but has there ever been one quite like this?

In his latest stunt Banksy set up a stall in Central Park and stocked it with 100% authentic Banksy canvases and sat a grey haired gentleman on a chair next to them to sell these originals at $60 a pop. In many tourist areas its common place to find all sorts of Banksy prints and even copies of originals. The wise steer clear of these or avoid paying anything much over the cost of production. Today was an exception, these were genuine, but business was slow. In fact it took several hours for the first sale and even then the price was negotiated down by the purchaser to half their ‘value’. You can see what happened in the accompanying video here with just a few people making purchases.

Of course those that parted with cash have a real bargain on their hands with Banksy originals such as these changing hands for tens of thousands of pounds. But oddly enough even $420 of sales is not a bad return for a stall holder – it just goes to show that the art stands up on its own without the hype. And as for those lucky people in the video – do they even realise yet just how much their purchases would be valued at? I hope they took care getting them home.

Banksy – Better Out Than In – Day 11

With an amusing title ‘The Sirens Of The Lambs’ this van was to be seen touring New York’s Meatpacking District complete with animated and vocal fluffy toys on their way to the slaughterhouse. It creates a sight that to me is part amusing, part disturbing evoking incredulity, laughter and a little bit of terror in pedestrians who viewed the truck as witnessed in the video here. A typically site specific work in East New York with an unusual visitor to the city in evidence.

Horses with military vision goggles ride over a car in a scene Banksy has created in Lower East Side. Initially it may appear a confusing picture but one listen to the accompanying soundtrack on reveals that this piece relates to the chilling shooting from an Apache Helicopter of men and children in Iraq.

Today’s Banksy piece is a simple line of text written on a door in Greenpoint, New York. The door was removed within hours of placement….

Banksy – Better Out Than In – Day 7

A balloon with sticking plasters created a perfect photo opportunity for passers by in Brooklyn for just a few hours before it was painted out by a local graffiti writer who put his personal beef above any ones elses enjoyment. He’ll get quite a bit of fame from going over this piece, shit happens and all that but there are probably other more effective ways  for him to deal with whatever issues he has.

Banksy – Better Out Than In – Day 6

Day 6 – and it’s a video rather than a street piece. I’ll not ruin the punchline here but watch this and see why it’s clocked up nearly five million views in a little over 24 hours.

Banksy – Better Out Than In – Day 5

Something of a sculptural piece is hitting the streets of New York. A delivery truck will tour round the city at night with it’s interior revealing a rainbow, waterfall and butterflies in stark contrast to it’s graffiti covered exterior. Starting off in the East Village it will be in a different location every evening.

Banksy – Better Out Than In – Day 4

Day 4 and Banksy has simply added ‘The Musical’ to several pieces of existing graffiti text showing that he’s very much  location scouting in earnest as his residency in New York gets well underway. More examples over on
